Yet, as countless victims of catastrophic auto accidents can attest, whiplash injuries are very real, and their consequences are anything but a joke.

What Is Whiplash?

Whiplash is an injury that occurs when the neck is abruptly jolted either forward or backward due to a violent impact. As a result of this sudden jolt, the muscles and ligaments of the neck become stretched well beyond their typical range of motion, causing them to become painfully strained. Although whiplash most commonly results from auto accidents, the injury can be caused by any type of collision, such as a slip-and-fall accident or sports accident in which a person collides with the ground.

As with any other type of strain, whiplash injuries can vary widely in terms of their severity. Minor whiplash injuries can heal within days or weeks. More serious whiplash injuries can require months or years to heal. In the worst possible cases, whiplash injuries can last a lifetime, permanently restricting the victim’s range of motion and compromising his or her quality of life.

Although neck pain and difficulty moving the head and neck are the most common symptoms of whiplash, they are not the only symptoms. Other symptoms include dizziness, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), jaw pain, arm or shoulder pain, back pain, headaches, and lack of balance. These symptoms can also point to other injuries, including traumatic brain injuries, which is why it is so important that accident victims seek immediate and thorough medical care as soon as possible after an accident.

Never assume that any injury is mild or that it will subside without medical intervention, especially after a serious accident.
