Heather J. Higson has over 25 years of experience litigating medical malpractice and other personal injury cases. She was an honored recipient of the 2014 Trial Lawyer of the Year in Medical Malpractice awarded by the Orange County Trial Lawyers Association. She has represented infants, children and adults suffering from a wide range of severe and catastrophic injuries.
Ms. Higson has practiced on both sides of medical malpractice cases, which provides her with valuable strategy insight. She represented physicians and hospitals during the first 10 years of her legal career, and then discovered her true passion, representing the victims of medical malpractice and their loved ones.
Ms. Higson received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature from Middlebury College in 1983. Ms. Higson relocated to California and attended Pepperdine University School of Law. She received her Juris Doctor degree in May 1989 and became a member of the State Bar of California the same year.
Ms. Higson practiced as an Attorney at Rushfeldt, Shelley & Drake from 1989 to 1991 focusing on medical malpractice defense representing physicians and hospitals. In 1991, she relocated to San Diego and represented the victims of medical malpractice, catastrophic automobile accidents and product defects. Ms. Higson relocated to South Orange County in 1993. From 1993 to 1999, she was an Attorney at Bonne, Bridges, Mueller, O’Keefe & Nichols, handling a substantial medical malpractice defense case load representing physicians, hospitals and medical groups.
In 1999, Ms. Higson established the Law Office of Heather J. Higson and was entrusted with handling the medical malpractice and elder abuse cases of patients and their loved ones, in addition to personal injury and product defect cases for victims. Shortly thereafter, Ms. Higson and Sean M. Burke associated on a number of medical malpractice and elder abuse cases, and Ms. Higson formally joined Mr. Burke’s law firm in 2006.
Ms. Higson not only represents the patients of negligent health care providers, but also their family members in wrongful death cases.
At the Burke law firm, Ms. Higson has represented clients suffering from a wide range of negligently caused injuries including cerebral palsy, paralysis, later stage breast, cervical, uterine, ovarian, lung, brain, kidney, skin, and other organ cancer, brain damage, cardiac damage, sepsis, hyperbilirubinemia related sequelae, spinal injuries, pancreatitis, kidney failure, drug overdose injuries, esophageal, gall bladder, colon, uterine and other organ perforations, myelomeningocele excision causing loss of cerebrospinal fluid, nerve damage, appendicitis, and orthopedic injuries. Ms. Higson not only represents the patients of negligent health care providers, but also their family members in wrongful death cases.
Additionally, Ms. Higson has extensive experience litigating elder and dependant adult abuse cases involving bedsores, dehydration, malnutrition, falls, parasitic outbreaks, clostridium difficile colitis, over medication, chemical and physical restraints and under staffing against skilled nursing facilities, assisted living facilities and board and care homes. Moreover, Ms. Higson has represented clients suffering injuries associated with dog bites, vehicle collisions, malfunctioning medical equipment, defective products, and negligent maintenance of property.
Ms. Higson is an active member of the Orange County Trial Lawyers Association, the Orange County Women’s Lawyers Association, and the Orange County Bar Association. She enjoys hiking, skiing, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.
